3D printed parts

CPM offers 3D printing services based on FDM Technology, or fused deposition modeling. In fused deposition modeling, the model or part is produced by extruding small streams of material which harden immediately to form layers.

Fused deposition modeling is an innovative type of printing that uses additive manufacturing technology to produce 3D objects. Common applications include proof of concept, prototyping, and small-batch manufacturing.

Benefits of 3D Printing (FDM)

•  Production-grade thermoplastics are mechanically and environmentally stable.
•  Semi complex geometries that would otherwise be problematic can become practical with FDM technology.
•  FDM is closely linked to rapid prototyping for form, fit and functionality of the design.
•  You save money with 3D prototyping. FDM delivers prototypes at not just a tiny fraction of the time but also at a much lower cost than traditional prototyping requires.
•  The prototype can be altered and re-printed just as quickly and affordably.
•  FDM works well for producing parts with few geometry limitations, so it works well for producing semi complex geometry including the possibility of undercuts.

Disadvantages of 3D Printing (FDM)

•  Half the strength of injection molded parts: Due to the extruded layering process of FDM, prototype parts are roughly 50% as strong and stiff as parts created through injection molding.
•  Not cost-effective for large batches: If you need just a few of the same item, 3D printing can be an affordable choice because setup is minimal. However, large batches are made more cheaply by other methods.

Materials

There are many types of materials available, which one to use is dependent upon the 3D printer and what properties are needed to fit the application. We find PLA works for the majority of projects we handle.

PLA is a biodegradable plastic that is becoming more popular as an ecofriendly alternative to traditional plastics. The downside is that it is not as durable or flexible as ABS plastic. PLA is available in a variety of colors.

Powder Coating

Accuracy, Resolution and Tolerance

Dimensional accuracy will vary based upon part size, geometry, and print orientation. FDM 3D printing systems are designed to produce concept models, which do not typically require accuracy down to a few thousandths of an inch.

Resolution, or Layer thickness options range from 0.1mm to 0.3mm and vary by material and 3D printer. Your ideal layer thickness will depend on your part and application.

Tolerances are a function of the FDM 3D printing system producing the part and the overall size of the part. Accuracy is geometry dependent.

Surface Finish

The edges of each layer shows in the finished product, especially in curved surfaces. However, the edges generally do not effect function.

Printing resolution determines the outcome of the surface finish. The finer the resolution, or the thinner the layer, the better the surface finish. Lower resolution printing however takes more time to print which in turn does affect the cost of the printed part.
